What is Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation?

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is a skill that the trained public uses to save lives in cases of cardiac arrest. CPR enables the public to provide immediate aid until medical assistance arrives and is one of the vital links in the "Chain of Survival".

Specifically, the course will teach you how to:

♥ Reduce your risk of heart disease
♥ Recognize the signs/symptoms of a heart attack
♥ Recognize the importance of initiating the chain of survival
♥ Open the victim's airway
♥ Perform artificial respiration
♥ Perform external blood circulation
♥ Perform the Heimlich Maneuver

Ultimately, the more people who are trained in the life-saving skills of CPR, the greater the chance of our community responding to the needs.

Background

Coronary heart disease is a growing problem. In Niagara Region, heart disease remains the number one cause of death, beyond that of national and provincial averages. With treatment and prevention advances, the survival rate from heart attack has improved and can continue to improve.

The Chain of Survival is a concept by which: Healthy Choices, Early Recognition, Early Access, Early CPR, Early Defibrillation, Early Advanced Care and Early Rehabilitation will save lives.

Survivors of sudden cardiac arrest usually have four things in common:

♥ Event was witnessed, recognized as an emergency, 911 called.
♥ CPR was started immediately.
♥ Someone arrived quickly with a defibrillator to shock the heart back to a healthier rhythm.
♥ Emergency Medical Services personnel provided advanced life support, including airway and breathing support and medication.
